Petcoke dust storm footage

Date Created: 2013

Created By: Dave Barboza

Media Type: Film/Video

Backstory:

Cell phone video taken by Dave Barboza in 2013 when a petcoke dust storm forced him to cancel a backyard party for his mother’s birthday. The footage was subsequently posted on youtube. Southeast Chicago residents at the time didn’t know it was dust from the massive piles of petcoke being stored along the Calumet River. The footage helped galvanize activism against the storage of petcoke in the region.
