Ray and Millie Dolatowski

Date Created: 1943

Donor: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dolatowski

Media Type: Photograph

Backstory:

Ray and Millie Dolatowski were siblings who grew up in a Polish Family in South Chicago along with three other siblings. Their parents had been born in Koziejaty, Poland and, after relocating to the United States, they owned a small cigar and candy store on Burley Ave in South Chicago’s heavily Polish “Bush” neighborhood. In this photo, Millie is wearing Ray’s uniform jacket with his Airborne insignia. It was a common sight to see men and women in uniform throughout Southeast Side neighborhoods during WW II, many of whom were on leave before reporting to assignments or deployments.
