Backstory:

Girls enjoy the Merry Go Round at St. Columba’s Parish Carnival circa 1950. During summertime in Southeast Chicago, many churches and local organizations held carnivals as fund-raisers. Carnivals were a high point of summer social life. Rides included the ferris wheel, tilt-a-whirl, and merry-go-round. Young people could test their skills and win prizes at various booths, such as throwing a ping-pong in a fish bowl to win a goldfish. Many carnivals offered raffles with a new car as the grand prize. Kids also looked forward to the food, cotton candy and other treats.
