Backstory:

This photo shows members of a Shriner’s masonic fraternal organization participating in the First Annual Youth Day and Parade in the Calumet Heights region of Southeast Chicago. The parade began on 95th St and Colfax and headed north on Jeffery Blvd to Stony Island Park. It was sponsored by the Consolidated Community Improvement Association, an active community group founded by Helen Preston who donated the photo. Neighborhood parades have historically been central features of community life in Chicago. The Bud Billiken parade, for example, which began in Chicago in 1929 is the largest African-American parade in the United States. It traditionally ends in Washington Park a short distance north of Southeast Chicago.
