Backstory:

Image of Mouth of Calumet River from 1870. Donated with large groups of images by US Steel South Works. Image presumably a photograph that was perhaps retouched by hand? It depicts a large sand bar created by a bend in the river just before it emptied into Lake Michigan. There are women and men standing in the foreground, a wooden structure on the left, and a boat pulled up to the edge of the sand bar.
